On paper we couldn't be more opposites. Holly loves bright, loud colors while Sarah loves dark, moody colors. Our personalities reflect that as well. Holly is outgoing and has never met a stranger and Sarah is a little more reserved and blah blah blah.
Prologue
Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.
We met in December of 2017 when Sarah and her husband, Eddie, visited Nebraska for a job interview. Holly and her husband, Curt, hosted a dinner for Eddie & Sarah and the committee members interviewing Eddie. We immediately bonded over our love of musicals, parenting, and our favorite places in California (Sarah is a California native. Holly lived there for 4 years.). After everyone left their house that night, Holly turned to Curt and told him that the church had to hire Eddie because she wanted Sarah to move here and be her friend!
Well, the committee chose Eddie. The Mariels moved to Nebraska during a very cold and snowy February. And our families bonded as the Rickertsens taught the Mariels how to survive blizzards that knock out power (and thus water) in country houses (both families lived in the country at that time). We took the kids sledding in the hills of the Rickertsen’s pasture. And the Rickertsens helped the Mariels buy clothes designed for Nebraska winters vs. Southern California winters. And our two families have been doing life together ever since!

We Do Life Together
Having lived in many different places - oftentimes far from their relatives, Sarah is very good at choosing framily - friends who become family. Her emotional intelligence, ability to sit with others in whatever they are experiencing or feeling, willingness to dig in deep, and ability to find beauty in everyone and every situation make her an excellent friend. She is gracious and welcoming.
Holly’s outgoing personality, ability to remember everyone’s names, and involvement in as many activities, boards, and organizations as possible make her a natural to help new residents get acquainted and involved in the community. She loves to introduce people and make social connections. She loves to host people in her home and strives to make sure it’s always a good time!
Our opposing strengths make us a great team. Sarah saw someone on social media refer to herself and her best friend as “Co-Moms.” We told our kids about that and the term stuck! Our kids know that they will be parented by all four of us as necessary. If one of us is not around, they ask permission from the Co-Mom (or dad) who is present!
The Mariels moved from their country rental home to a house in town after their first couple of years in Nebraska. Their home in town has become our gathering spot. When one of the Rickertsens needs a place to kill time in town in between activities, we head to the Mariels and walk in like we live there! When any of our kids have a game, concert, or play, both families show up. When there are multiple activities happening at the same time, we divide and conquer so that, hopefully, every kid has someone there to support them! When one of our kids ends up in the emergency room (this has happened more than we care to admit!), the other one accompanies us, picks up our other kids from activities, feeds our other kids, and/or picks up prescriptions, braces, or crutches! When one of our kids needs someone to talk to, they know they have four adults who love and care for them that they can choose from. Doing life together is such a blessing to us both and to our families.

The Curated Collective is Born
